Conference Background
Leadership Pharmacy, a new practitioner leadership conference, is a unique opportunity available to pharmacists in Iowa and Wisconsin who are interested in becoming leaders in the profession of pharmacy. The Conference is designed to provide an unequalled opportunity for pharmacists in their first
fifteen years of practice to develop organizational skills which will enable both personal and professional growth. Twenty pharmacists, ten from each state of Iowa and Wisconsin, will be selected to participate in this unique conference. Participants will be put into groups for lodging purposes in order to encourage participant interaction. Pharmacists who want to better develop their leadership potential and who desire to make a difference in their profession and the communities in which they practice are encouraged to apply.
The Iowa Pharmacy Association and the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin, along with
Mallinckrodt and and the McKesson Foundation, have agreed to underwrite all costs associated with the conference for the selected participants.
Conference Goals
The goals of Leadership Pharmacy are four fold:
- To provide conference participants with strong leadership training.
- To increase conference participants' awareness of issues impacting the profession of pharmacy nationally and in their own state.
- To encourage the involvement of all new practitioners in professional and community activities.
- To demonstrate the interest of the state pharmacy organizations in developing new practitioners for leadership positions within the profession.
Participants
Any pharmacist residing and/or practicing in Iowa or Wisconsin who is in his/her first
fifteen (15) years of practice is eligible to apply for participation in Leadership Pharmacy. Eligible candidates are encouraged to submit an application detailing their interest in the program. All applications received prior to the deadline for submission are reviewed by the applicant’s state pharmacy organization’s Executive Committee for subsequent selection to the Conference. Applicants are selected based on the following criteria:
- The applicant's demonstrated leadership potential.
- The applicant's involvement in professional and community activities as well as college involvement in student projects.
- The clarity and vision demonstrated in the applicant's responses to the application questions.
What Past Participants Have to Say About Their Leadership Pharmacy Experience...
"The amount of social interaction time with fellow participants and leaders in the state pharmacy organizations was incredible…I never expected this conference to be so much fun!"
"I look forward to staying in contact with all of my new friends, and using some new skills to further our common mission. Thanks again for the great experience!"
"Overall I think this was an excellent conference and one of the best choices I’ve made in my professional career."
"I met many new people at the conference who share my passion for the profession, and I feel like I came away with new skills which I intend to apply in both my personal and professional life. In short, I cannot express how rewarding the opportunity to experience this conference was to me."
"The format of the conference allowed me the opportunity to find out more about my chosen profession from leaders in pharmacy. I was able to gain valuable leadership ideas and methods that I know will be useful to me and my employer."
"Interacting with the officers of the pharmacy organizations allowed me an opportunity to see that I too can become a leader; all it takes is interest and enthusiasm for the profession."
