Internships
An internship is a great way to broaden your
professional experience, learn more about pharmacy, and make connections
that will help you after graduation. Whether you want to spend the
summer in Iowa
or in places like Washington,
D.C.,
Boston, or
Chicago, there are diverse opportunities in areas
ranging from community and hospital pharmacy to managed care to health
policy. Many internships are competitive and have deadlines as early as
December, so plan ahead in your search for something to do this summer.
In addition to information on this page, your Dean’s office may have
information on other internship opportunities.
Internship Requirements
Internship hours can be obtained from any of the
fifty states. In order to acquire internship hours, you must obtain an

Residencies
Pharmacy residencies show a new graduate how to
apply coursework to everyday practice, while also demonstrating the many
career paths available to pharmacists. Pharmacy residencies give the
opportunity to obtain one to two years of organized, directed, intensive
training in a specific area of pharmacy practice. Post-Graduate Year 1
(PGY1) residencies are a general training in health systems, managed
care, or community setting. A Post-Graduate Year 2 (PGY2) residency
program is more specialized for advanced training. Examples of different
specialty areas include: acute care, oncology, pediatrics, and pharmacy
management. You must complete a PGY1 program before applying to a PGY2
program. To see more on why you should consider a residency visit the
the
ASHP webpage. Students interested in American Society of
Health-System Pharmacists accredited residencies must use the
ASHP match service, but for other residencies you should contact
individual residency coordinators. Good places to look for additional
information about residencies in particular fields are national
associations’ web pages, national association meetings, and your college
Dean’s office.
American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Accredited Residencies
This online directory includes pharmacy practice
residency programs in areas like managed care, community care, and home
care as well as specialized residency programs in fields such as drug
information, infectious disease pharmacy, and nuclear pharmacy. The ASHP
accreditation standard provides criteria that programs must meet to
receive and maintain accreditation. Although the standard requires
experiences in certain core areas, there is room for concentration in a
practice area and for additional experiences.
American
College of Clinical Pharmacy Directory of Residencies and Fellowships
The American
College
of Clinical Pharmacy
provides a directory of residencies and fellowships. Over 400
opportunities are listed in areas such as pharmacy practice, critical
care, infectious diseases, primary care, ambulatory care, family
medicine, and community pharmacy. ACCP and ASHP have a joint program for
accreditation of Pharmacotherapy Specialty Residencies. Also identified
are those fellowship training programs that have sought peer review by
the ACCP Fellowship Review Committee, and that have been recognized as
meeting the ACCP Guidelines for Research Fellowship Training Programs.
American Pharmacists Association Community Pharmacy Residency Program
The Community Pharmacy Residency Program was
established by the American Pharmaceutical Association in 1986 to foster
the development of formal postgraduate education and training
experiences for pharmacists in innovative community pharmacy practice
settings.

Allied Owners Residencies
This listing of multi-site, multi-state community
residencies offers community pharmacy residency experiences at
independently owned retail pharmacy practices. Residents function as
full-time members of a pharmacy staff engaging in direct patient care
activities (i.e. dispensing, counseling, screenings), developing
innovative services, providing community education, and implementing
strategies to expand and create new lines of revenue for the practice.
Emphasis is placed on the development of clinical skills for the
community setting and pharmacy ownership awareness. This list also
provides information about national community pharmacy residency sites
and their recruitment status.

Fellowships
Fellowships are individualized, directed,
postgraduate research experiences that allow students to collaborate
with faculty mentors and become independent investigators in particular
areas of pharmacy. Students might pursue fellowships in areas such as
health outcomes, pharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, or specific clinical
areas such as ambulatory care, critical care, and oncology. Fellows
receive stipends and work at a research setting such as a university or
heath care institution. Fellowships last for a predetermined amount of
time -- usually one or two years.
