Iowa Board of Pharmacy

The Iowa Board of Pharmacy is comprised of five pharmacist members and two public members, all appointed by the Governor. The Board is responsible for regulating the practice of pharmacy and the legal distribution and dispensing of prescription drugs and precursor substances throughout the State.

The Board writes the administrative rules pertaining to the practice of pharmacy in the state of Iowa in order to implement and enforce the law. The state of Iowa utilizes the website rules.iowa.gov to gain public comments in the rulemaking process. New proposed rules will be posted to the site and are available for public comment for a specified period of time. Public comments are valuable in helping the board determine how the proposed additions or changes will be received. All comments are considered in the rulemaking process and participation is encouraged.

State Government Realignment

Under Senate File 514, the Iowa Boards and Commissions Review Committee is responsible for reviewing the efficiency and effectiveness of all boards, commissions, and other similar entities created in Iowa law.

On November 17, 2023, IPA hosted a webinar with Larry Johnson, Director of the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL), discussing the reorganization process and what it means for the Board of Pharmacy. A recording of the webinar is available here.

IPA has compiled a list of questions from pharmacy professionals on what to expect with these regulatory changes. See State Government Realignment FAQ.
