Since 2009, the Iowa Pharmacy Association has worked collaboratively with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy and other key stakeholders to create a statewide, pharmacy-based solution to appropriate medication disposal of unused, expired medications. This strategy has evolved to offer different options for disposal at local pharmacies or at local law enforcement facilities.

To find a local pharmacy or law enforcement facility that accepts controlled substances and non-controlled substances, click here.
Temporary locations are also available during annual DEA Take-Back events (Spring & Fall). Visit the DEA Website to learn more.
Unused or expired medication, prescription (Rx) or over-the-counter (OTC), including:
|Controlled Substances* including Adderall, Vicodin, Demerol, Hydrocodone, MS Contin, Ambien
Any sharps (syringes, lancets, etc.)
Home based care (HBC) or durable medical equipment (DME) supplies, such as rubbing alcohol.
*Controlled substances cannot be collected in the EcoReturns container.
** Contact local solid waste agency for disposal options
EcoReturns can only accept unused medication from patients or patients' caregivers. Inventory from a pharmacy or other healthcare center is NOT acceptable.
