Leadership Pharmacy, a new practitioner leadership program, is a unique opportunity available to pharmacists in Iowa and Wisconsin who are interested in becoming leaders in the profession of pharmacy. The program is designed to provide an unequaled opportunity for pharmacists in their first fifteen years of practice to develop leadership skills which will enable both personal and professional growth. Twenty pharmacists, ten each from Iowa and Wisconsin, are selected to participate in this unique program, which begins with a conference in early August. Pharmacists who want to better develop their leadership potential and who desire to make a difference in their profession and the communities in which they practice are encouraged to apply.

In recognition of the importance of this programming to the development of future leadership for professional associations, the Iowa Pharmacy Association and the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin, with generous support from Teva, McKesson, and practitioners from both Iowa and Wisconsin to endow this important program, have agreed to underwrite all costs associated with program for the selected participants.

Goals

The goals of Leadership Pharmacy are four fold:
  • To provide participants with strong leadership training.
  • To increase participants' awareness of issues impacting the profession of pharmacy nationally and in their own state.
  • To encourage the involvement of all new practitioners in professional and community activities.
  • To demonstrate the interest of the state pharmacy organizations in developing new practitioners for leadership positions within the profession.

Participants

Any IPA pharmacist member residing and/or practicing in Iowa or Wisconsin within their first three (3) to fifteen (15) years of practice is eligible to apply for participation in Leadership Pharmacy. Those pharmacists within their first two years of practice are encouraged to apply at a later time. Eligible candidates are encouraged to submit an application detailing their interest in the program. All applications received prior to the deadline for submission are reviewed by the applicant’s state pharmacy organization’s Executive Committee for subsequent selection to the program. Applicants are selected based on the following criteria:

  • The applicant's demonstrated leadership potential.
  • The applicant's involvement in professional and community activities as well as college involvement in student projects.
  • The clarity and vision demonstrated in the applicant's responses to the application questions
