Call for New Business Items

Each year at IPA Annual Meeting, the association holds two business sessions designed to consider new policy direction for the profession of pharmacy in Iowa. All IPA members are encouraged to attend and participate in the meetings of the House of Delegates. Any IPA member is encouraged to submit to the house a new business item calling for action on specific issues affecting pharmacy practice.

What is a new business item?
A new business item is a formal statement expressing the opinion, will, or intent of a body of persons or an individual.
Who can submit new business items?
Individual members, local pharmacist organizations, other associations or interests, or committees may submit new business items.
How do I write a new business item?
Each new business item should be in the standardized format used by the Iowa Pharmacy Association. The most effective new business items are carefully constructed to use as few words as possible to convey the basic issues and reasons for the stand.
How do I submit a new business item?
To submit your proposed new business, complete the online form, fax this form to IPA at 515-270-2979, or email Kate Gainer at  The deadline for submitting new business items is 24 hours before the first House of Delegates session. For 2017, the deadline is 8:30 a.m. on June 15, 2017, however, we would encourage you to submit your new business items by June 1, 2017.
What will happen to new business items?
The Vice Speaker of the House of Delegates will chair an open hearing for new business items during the first session of the House. This hearing is intended to stimulate discussion of, and to clarify issues surrounding new business items. At the final session of the house, the individual who submitted the new business item will introduce the item to the house for debate and possible adoption.
How will I know what new business items have been submitted?
New business items will be provided in writing to the delegates in advance of the House of Delegates meeting at which they are to be considered.
Can I comment on someone else’s new business item?
Yes! Following the actions of the House of Delegates, the new business items adopted will be published in the next issue of the Journal of the Iowa Pharmacy Association.
All new business items will be submitted to the House of Delegates for debate and follow up action. This is yet another opportunity to help shape the future of our profession.
