Tech Check Tech

“Tech-check-tech” (TCT) is a model which uses both pharmacists and experienced technicians at the top of their skill set, to improve efficiencies in pharmacy practice and improve patient care. As the Iowa Pharmacy Association continually works to advance the profession of pharmacy, the association had worked with hospital pharmacies in the early 1990’s that wanted to utilize tech-check-tech procedures. This lead to the IPA House of Delegates adoption of tech-check-tech policy in 1994, and revising that policy in 2007, to support programs that utilize certified pharmacy technicians verifying the work of other technicians to expand pharmacist participation in patient care activities.

Legislation was passed in 2007 to allow hospital pharmacies and pharmacies providing services to long-term facilities to develop and implement TCT programs per approval of the Iowa Board of Pharmacy. Spencer Hospital in Spencer, IA was the first hospital to have an approved TCT program in 2011. Since then, four additional hospitals have developed and received approval by the Board of Pharmacy to implement a TCT program.

In 2012 and 2013, legislation was passed to allow the board of pharmacy to approve pilot or research demonstration projects that advance the profession and improve patient care. These pilot projects can be initially approved for up to an 18-month timeframe, with the opportunity to be renewed longer after that time. Under approval by the Board of Pharmacy, a pilot project was approved in March 2014 to implement TCT across seven community pharmacies, with plans to expand the project to reproduce the model in other community pharmacy settings. The TCT process is being studied as well as the patient care activities performed by the pharmacists.

To assist your pharmacy practice in implementing TCT, IPA has partnered with the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin (PSW) to provide PSW’s TCT Toolkit developed in accordance with Wisconsin regulations. As IPA works to develop Iowa-specific documents, IPA hopes this toolkit will help to expand the number of pharmacy sites successfully deploying certified pharmacy technicians in advanced drug distribution roles to allow pharmacists a broader opportunity to provide direct patient care services.
