IPA Launches Payment for Pharmacist Professional Services Task Force

In December, the IPA Board of Trustees approved the creation of a task force to advance pharmacist provider status and payment for pharmacy services in Iowa. The task force will be chaired by IPA's Senior Advisor on Payer Relations, Matt Hosford.

In December of 2021, the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) Board of Trustees approved the creation of a
Payment for Pharmacist Professional Services Task Force to advance pharmacist provider status and payment for pharmacy services in Iowa. The task force will be chaired by IPA's Senior Advisor on Payer Relations, Matt Hosford, and will include members from diverse practice settings as well as payer and PBM representatives.

Specifically, the task force will:

  • Inventory current and future professional services that pharmacists should be compensated for, as well as barriers to payment for services;
  • Establish best practices for pharmacist professional service billing to commercial and government payers specific to each unique practice environment (e.g., community, hospital, office, and virtual pharmacy);
  • Establish a recommended fee schedule for pharmacist professional services;
  • Create a roadmap for IPA to take action in advancing provider status and payment for pharmacy services in Iowa.

The task force will support IPA's position that pharmacists' inclusion as providers will lead to improved quality of patient care, increased patient access, and decreased overall costs of care.

IPA President Chris Clayton will appoint Payment for Pharmacist Professional Services Task Force members. If you are interested in serving on the task force, please complete this survey before February 10. Task force invitations will be sent out Monday, February 14 with the first meeting occurring in March.

If you have any questions regarding the newly created task force, contact Matt Hosford at mhosford@iarx.org.
