Based on current language within the Iowa Statewide Protocol for Immunizations, pharmacists in Iowa do NOT have the authority to independently order and administer the two FDA-approved RSV vaccines (Abryvso and Arexvy).
Pharmacists may administer RSV vaccines in Iowa pharmacies at this time ONLY IF one of the two following criteria is met:
- Patient obtains a prescription from a physician's office
OR
- Pharmacists establish a collaborative practice agreement with a provider allowing for the ordering and administration of RSV vaccines in their pharmacy.
The official language within the Iowa Statewide Protocol for Immunizations is as follows:
Although the CDC Director has officially adopted ACIP's recommendations related to the newly approved RSV vaccines, they have yet to be incorporated into the CDC's published vaccine schedules, an explicit prerequisite to pharmacists ordering and administering any vaccines independently in Iowa pharmacies pursuant to Iowa's Statewide Protocol for Immunizations as it stands.
Pursuant to Iowa Code section 155A.46 currently, a vaccine must be on the approved vaccination schedule in order for a pharmacist to order and administer it independently.
