We’re Moving! CEO Update on the IPA Headquarters Sale

A significant change is underway for the Iowa Pharmacy Association: the sale of IPA headquarters at 8515 Douglas Ave in Urbandale. For nearly all IPA members, this is the only ‘home' for IPA that you've known. The IPA headquarters has hosted countless Board meetings, committee meetings, receptions, fundraisers, and significant milestones. This space was the backdrop to not only countless events but even more emotions—from joy and laughter; to frustration and anger; to excitement and collegiality—all to benefit the pharmacy profession in our state. Whether you spent time here as a Board member, Committee member, meeting attendee, rotation student or intern, or perhaps never stepped foot inside, IPA's headquarter space has served an important role for the past 40+ years.
Why did IPA sell its headquarters?
- Finances. The proceeds from the sale will be invested for the betterment of the profession.
- Modernizing. An update to IPA's office space will provide updated technology and a contemporary feel that matches the innovative work of IPA.
- Flexibility. Recruiting and retaining talented staff is important to ensure IPA can carry out the mission and goals of the organization.
The IPA headquarters is owned by PNI, Inc – IPA's wholly-owned for-profit subsidiary. The only function of PNI, Inc at present is ownership of the headquarters. The PNI Board is comprised of the IPA Executive Committee members. PNI has evaluated best utilization of the headquarters space since 2020.
Due diligence during this process included:
- Staff and IPA Board of Trustees survey
- CPA review and analysis
- Commercial real estate analysis
The strongest theme from the Board's due diligence process was the importance of IPA having an office location. While the staff can work remotely, it was important to both the IPA Board and current staff to maintain an office location. The PNI Board voted to sell the current headquarters in March 2023. A sale agreement was approved by the Board in October 2023. The Board approved signing the lease for new office space in January 2024.
Where is the new IPA headquarters?
A 5-year lease has been signed for new office space at 2570 106th Street, Unit D, Urbandale, Iowa.
This office space provides easy access to Interstates 35/80 for both staff and members. IPA will remain in the west suburbs of Des Moines, providing free, surface level parking and proximity to many amenities. While much smaller in size, the new office will have a conference room that can host 12-15 people. Large Board meetings (3-4 times/year) will be held off-site.
How will this impact IPA members and staff?
In a way, selling the IPA headquarters feels like selling a property that has been in your family for generations. There is history and nostalgia. The feelings are different for everyone.
There is also a lot of work in moving an office. Our team is prepared for this, and we expect there to be minimal interruption to our typical work.
Lastly, for the staff, there is excitement. As an organization, IPA is excited to continue serving our members and the profession from the ‘next home' for IPA!
