The Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) and American Pharmacists Association (APhA) met with Senator Chuck Grassley's Health Policy Advisor, Nicholas Pottebaum, in Washington, D.C., to discuss pharmacist-provided patient care services in rural areas.
Advocacy led by APhA President, Randy McDonough, PharmD, MS, BCGP, BCPS, FAPhA, co-owner and Director of Clinical Services at Towncrest Pharmacy, inspired Senator Grassley to take action.
On September 15, 2025, Senator Grassley reintroduced the Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Areas Act (S.2800). This bipartisan legislation would enable pharmacists to deliver the full scope of services that are already authorized by their respective state laws and be paid as health care providers under Medicare Part B in medically underserved areas.
Senator Grassley and Senator Ben Ray Luján (N.M.) are requesting information on pharmacists providing chronic care.
IPA asks Iowa pharmacists to submit feedback on pharmacist-provided patient care services—those you are already offering and those you plan to implement under Iowa's standard of care framework. This is a great opportunity to showcase the innovative services pharmacists are providing to Iowa patients!
