Test & Treat Toolkit

 Test & Treat Toolkit
Updated June 2024 – Version 3.0

Beginning July 1, 2021, all pharmacies across Iowa became eligible to provide test & treat services for individuals six years or age and older. Along with testing for influenza, strep, and covid-19, pharmacies can prescribe treatment following a positive test result via the Statewide Protocols developed by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Public Health.

To assist your pharmacy practice in implementing Test & Treat services, IPA developed a toolkit consisting of resources to assist with the CLIA waiver process, education requirements, supply procurement, and much more!

This is a free member benefit for ENGAGED Pharmacist, Associate, Platinum Business Partner, and Technician members. Discounted rates available for other paid member types. Please LOG IN to your account to receive your free/discounted member rate.

IPA's Test and Treat Toolkit includes:

1) POCT FAQ

Frequently asked questions include but are not limited to pharmacist authority, training requirements, delegation of point of care testing activities, and reporting requirements. IPA collaborated with the Board of Pharmacy for information provided.

2) CLIA Certification

To perform CLIA-waived tests in the United States, a pharmacist must apply for and maintain a CLIA Certificate of Waiver and CLIA license.

3) Education and Training

One of the most important prerequisites for successfully implementing POCT in the pharmacy is being accredited to perform the services themselves. There are several ACPE-accredited options available.

4) Supplies

There are several different manufacturers who are currently offering POCT devices and tests.

5) Billing & Payment

Currently, Iowa Medicaid Enterprise provides reimbursement for COVID-19 testing. At this time, payers are not providing reimbursement for other POCT services. Learn how to still provide services to patients and demonstrate the value that pharmacies provide in expanding access to care.

6) Statewide Protocols

Statewide protocols (effective 9/1/21) for influenza and GAS specify the criteria and procedures for a pharmacist to initiate CLIA-waived point-of-care testing. At this time there is no statewide protocol for COVID-19.

7) Sample Screening Tool & Patient Evaluation

Sample Screening Tools for influenza and strep can be modified to meet the needs of your pharmacy for implementation of point of care testing services.

8) Sample Follow-up Documentation & Communication to Providers

Sample documentation and provider communication can be modified to meet the needs of your pharmacy for implementation of point of care testing services.
